Mode of Imitation or Mode of Furthering Understanding?

The use in which Aristotle is employing the concept of "mode of imitation" I think communicates a never-ending cycle of both poetry and prose (with recognition to multiple forms of poetry given) and its material being re-worked, re-formed, and re-interpreted throughout the ages. The way Aristotle puts this concept seems to give a negative connotation towards poetry and prose being a vehicle for truth, wisdom and understanding. My question is, could Aristotle's mode of imitation really be a mode of furthering understanding? What looks like an imitation of works throughout the centuries is actually a honing, perfecting of ideals, material and art-forms. It's an effort to further understanding, draw a step nearer to efficiency and understanding.

P.S. I posted on Natalie's and Briana's .
