Far best is he who knows all things himself;
Good, he that hearkens when men counsel right;
But he who neither knows, nor lays to heart
Another's wisdom, is a useless wight.
This stuck out to me not just because it is a quote in the reading, but because it has a lot of truth. The advice is to listen to the advice of wise men. Psalm 1 says this too. It makes me wonder if Hesiod had read the Psalm. He probably did not. It is important that we seek counseling from others, but not just any counsel. We have to listen to only those who we know to be wise. It is one thing to listen to another man's wisdom, but we also have to take it to heart and think about. If we do not do that, then Hesiod and Aristotle would say that we are "useless wights."
