“As therefore Christ is the clothing of the soul, so by an
intelligible kind of reasoning the soul is said to be the clothing of the body;
for it is an ornament of the body, covering and concealing its mortal nature.”

In
reading this quote, the image of a jacket comes to mind. Christ is like a
jacket, and the soul is like a shirt. Mortality is obviously the body. This
analogy was really helpful in understanding Origen’s meaning in this section. Something
is mortal if it partakes in life. Therefore, the soul covering the body’s mortality
means the soul is eternal. Christ covering the soul points to where the soul
will spend eternity. He covers the souls of the saints, and they will spend
eternity in with him. Is there another way to interpret this? I was very
intrigued by this section and would love to hear another perspective on it.

Like you first stated, I too thought of an article of clothing but my mind was more focused on the "..for it is an Ornament of the body, covering and concealing its mortal nature." portion. I read it more in the aspect of the soul acting as a covering for modesty, your interpretation makes more sense but thats is what came immediately to my mind.
ReplyDeleteI love the imagery that you got from this quote!! I didn't necessarily see it like clothing, but it makes so much more sense to me when I look at it this way.
ReplyDeleteI found this interesting as well. I feel it is a picture that truly portrays what is everlasting and shines through
ReplyDeleteI too thought this was a interesting comparison but when we are in Christ it is like a cloak or jacket that encapsules us in His love and grace.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that Christ covers us like a coat. God does not see us as sinners anymore when we repent and trust in him. He actually looks at us and sees Christ.
ReplyDeleteI really like that imagery of the jacket (Jesus) , covering the shirt (the soul), covering the body (morality). It does a good job of depicting us and how Jesus covers us, but it also depicts how in the same way that we get to choose whether we want to wear that jacket, we get to decide whether we want to accept Jesus as our savior or not.
