I think this whole book of ethics boils down virtue(s). A
good person is striving towards being virtuous. A virtuous person is someone
who has a good balance of virtues. If someone is gluttonous in one virtue but,
is starving another virtue he is not virtuous. I don’t think that Aristotle is
saying that pleasure is a bad thing, I think he is saying that pleasure in
excess is bad as well as not enough pleasure is bad. The same thing applies
with money, fame, and generosity. The problem with this is that there is no
standard for what is too much, it is different for everyone. What is gluttonous
for one may not be enough for someone else. The real challenge comes when you
are trying to find the balance that is virtuous for you.
