The image of Capaneus really caught my attention. He seems so foolish, to be in his position and still curse God. I could not help but think that he is a representation of any human before they surrender to Christ. The lost sit in their own ruin and mock God. They do not honor Him but remain on their paths that lead to destruction. They cling to their pride. All the while, they suffer and cling to control and order as if they are able to have any goodness on their own. Knowing that the lost are in this state invokes great pity. It should spur us on to point people to Christ so that they do not spend eternity separated from God in this state of torment and scorn.

It's a shame that some people are so prideful that they are unable to admit their mistakes or see the writing on the wall until it's too late, and even then, some people, like Capaneus, still refuse to take responsibility for what they have done and instead choose to blame others for their own misfortunes, even if it was their own fault.
ReplyDeletePride is one of the biggest things that keep people from God or Christ followers from truly following. Pride and want of control produce foolishness. I'm pretty sure Capaneus would be a great canidate for the fool discussed in Proverbs.
ReplyDeleteYes, he seems so foolish to reject God and curse Him. You make an excellent point that nonbelievers fall into this issue before their lives start to conform to the character of Christ. It is truly a state of despair and loss when we reject God and pridefully cling to our own control.
ReplyDeleteYou pointed something out that I have thought about a lot reading through Dante. It has made me think about how horrible the real hell is and how important it is that I share the gospel.
ReplyDeleteI had a big problem with this portion of the text, I don't feel like this is an accurate portrayal of what Hell will be like. In Phillipians 2:10-11, Paul states that ever knee will bow, I think that those damned to Hell will be in humble adoration of God, for they will truly see how wicked they are and how holy God is.
